The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has assigned a Class II recall rating to Wellsley Farms non-fat Greek yogurt, after reports surfaced about potential plastic contamination. The recall, initiated voluntarily by the company on December 11, 2024, affects both the plain and vanilla flavors of the yogurt.

The FDA’s Risk Assessment

The FDA’s Class II designation means the product may cause temporary or medically reversible health issues, with the chance of serious harm considered remote. The recall is linked to the possible presence of plastic in the yogurt, which was distributed across Maryland, Connecticut, and Kentucky.

Details of the Recall

The affected products are Wellsley Farms Greek yogurt in 40oz containers, with product codes “888670048085” for plain and “888670048078” for vanilla. The yogurt has best-by dates ranging from December 4, 2024, to January 15, 2025. Approximately 16,000 cases of the affected yogurt were distributed in the specified states.

Health Risks of Plastic Contamination

Plastic contamination in food products poses several health risks. While plastic is typically excreted by the body within a day, smaller particles like microplastics can enter the bloodstream, reach various organs, and potentially disrupt cell function. This increases the risk of conditions such as cancer and metabolic disorders. Additionally, plastics can leach harmful chemicals that act as endocrine disruptors, interfering with hormone regulation and potentially leading to fertility problems and other long-term health issues. There’s also the risk of choking, digestive tract damage, or dental injury if plastic pieces are ingested or chewed.

Widespread Recalls Due to Plastic

This recall is part of a growing trend of products being pulled from shelves over plastic contamination. Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Agriculture issued a health alert regarding frozen ground beef contaminated with hard plastic, metal, and other foreign objects. On December 13, 2024, the FDA also announced a Class II recall for “Connie’s Thin Crust Cheese Pizza” due to plastic contamination concerns.

Consumer Safety Tips

Experts advise consumers to be cautious when shopping, particularly if they have family members who are at higher risk from foodborne contaminants, such as young children, pregnant women, the elderly, or those with weakened immune systems. Teresa Murray, the director of consumer protection at the U.S. Public Interest Research Group, recommends shopping at stores that have strong recall notification policies to stay informed about potential safety issues.

Wellsley Farms, based in Seattle, Washington, has not yet responded to Newsweek’s inquiry for comment, though the recall was officially listed by HP Hood, a company based in Vernon, New York.

Consumers who purchased the affected yogurt are encouraged to dispose of the product or contact the manufacturer for further assistance.
