Fans of Landman were likely expecting some resolution in the season finale, but creator Taylor Sheridan had other plans. Instead of wrapping up Tommy Norris’s (Billy Bob Thornton) complicated troubles and leaving viewers hopeful for a second season, Sheridan piled on even more obstacles for the Texas oil-company manager. By the end of the season, Tommy is deep in trouble with local cartels, his sick boss (Jon Hamm), and even OSHA. However, one surprising cameo left fans reeling, marking a major twist no one saw coming.

In Tommy’s final moments of peril, facing off with the cartel threat, a new character, played by Oscar-nominated actor Andy Garcia, emerges to intervene. Garcia portrays Galino, the cartel’s ruthless leader, who steps in after one of his underbosses, Jimenez (Alex Meraz), tortures and threatens Tommy. In a dramatic move, Galino kills Jimenez and saves Tommy, but not before expressing his dissatisfaction with Jimenez’s management style. If Landman is renewed for a second season, there’s a strong chance that Galino will return as Tommy’s formidable new adversary.

Thornton spoke about the evolving relationship between Tommy and Galino, hinting at the challenges ahead. “Tommy’s dealing with someone now who is really smart,” he told Variety. “The other guys were hired to work for him, but now Tommy’s talking to the man himself. There are advantages and disadvantages to that. What’s the saying? Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Tommy figures if he semi-befriends this guy, maybe they can actually work this out.”

In a separate interview with TheWrap, Thornton teased what Tommy might face in a potential second season. “I think Tommy’s driven to make it a success, but at the same time, he’s scared to death right now about taking this on and probably doesn’t want to do it,” he said, giving a wink. “He doesn’t want to take any kind of executive position. And I got a feeling, if there were a season 2 [another wink], that he’s going to drag a lot of the landman into it. I don’t think the landman in Tommy is going away.”
