Walmart has recalled more than 12,000 cartons of its Great Value Chicken Broth in nine states across the U.S., citing potential packaging issues that may pose health risks. The recall notice was first issued on December 11, 2024, and later published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on January 8, 2025.

Affected Product Details

The recall involves 48-ounce cartons of Great Value Chicken Broth, sold at 242 Walmart locations in the following states:

  • Georgia
  • Louisiana
  • Missouri
  • Mississippi
  • Oklahoma
  • Tennessee
  • Texas

The affected products have a “best used by” date of March 25, 2026, and carry the UPC code 007874206684.

Reason for the Recall

Walmart initiated the recall due to concerns over packaging failures that could compromise the sterility of the chicken broth, leading to spoilage. While no illnesses have been reported to date, consuming spoiled broth could result in foodborne illnesses.

“The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority,” said a Walmart spokesperson in a statement. “As soon as we were made aware of the issue, we took action to remove all impacted products from the affected stores. We are continuing to work with the supplier to investigate the matter.”

What to Do if You Purchased the Product

Consumers in possession of the recalled chicken broth are advised to:

  1. Discard the product immediately.
  2. Request a full refund at any Walmart store.

If you have already consumed the product and experience symptoms of food poisoning, you should:

  • Contact your healthcare provider immediately.
  • Report any illness linked to the recalled product through the FDA’s safety reporting portal or by calling 1-888-INFO-FDA (1-888-463-6332).

Next Steps

Walmart is collaborating with its supplier to determine the cause of the packaging issues. The company emphasized its commitment to ensuring customer safety by swiftly addressing the situation and removing affected products from stores.
