Verizon Class Action Settlement 2024: What You Need to Know

Spread the love

In 2024, Verizon Wireless agreed to a $100 million class-action settlement following allegations of deceptive advertising practices. The lawsuit accused the company of failing to disclose additional fees, such as administrative charges, in their advertisements, resulting in higher-than-expected costs for customers.

Allegations Against Verizon

The plaintiffs argued that Verizon misled customers by not including these extra fees in the advertised plan prices, creating the false impression that their plans were more affordable than they actually were. By omitting the total costs, Verizon allegedly violated consumer protection laws, including the Federal Trade Commission Act, which prohibits deceptive advertising practices.

Settlement Terms

Verizon agreed to establish a $100 million settlement fund to compensate affected customers. The distribution of the fund is structured as follows:

  • Base Payment: Each valid claim will receive a flat payment of $15.
  • Monthly Service Bonus: Eligible customers will also receive $1 for each month they were charged the disputed administrative fees, up to a maximum of $85.

The total compensation for an individual claimant is capped at $100. The actual amount received depends on the number of valid claims submitted and the length of time the fees were charged.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for compensation, customers must meet the following requirements:

  1. Have been a Verizon customer with a postpaid wireless or data plan between January 1, 2016, and November 8, 2023.
  2. Have been charged the disputed administrative or telecom recovery fees during this time.

Payout Details

After the settlement receives final court approval, eligible claimants will receive their payments via check or electronic transfer.

In cases where payments go unclaimed or checks remain uncashed, these funds will be treated as unclaimed property and managed according to state regulations. Administrative costs may be deducted from unclaimed amounts as necessary.

Missed the Deadline?

Unfortunately, the deadline to submit claims for the Verizon settlement has passed. Eligible customers who filed claims were required to:

  1. Verify their eligibility and access the claim form on the official settlement website.
  2. Provide personal information, account details, and supporting documents, such as billing statements.
  3. Submit the completed form online or by mail before the deadline.

What’s Next?

If you’ve submitted a claim, stay updated on the progress of the settlement and monitor your communication for payout details. Payments will be disbursed after the settlement receives final approval.

This settlement highlights the importance of transparency in advertising and serves as a reminder for consumers to scrutinize billing details carefully. For those impacted, the compensation provides some restitution for the financial burden caused by undisclosed fees.

  5. I just revised a Venmo credit from Verizon for less than $15. The above article says the base payment is $15. What steps can be taken?

  6. Ok, I obviously had a valid claim or they wouldn’t have sent me money. Right? Well, this article says the “base” payment is $15, however I received $14.81. Lol! And I’ve been a Verizon electric customer since 2010… soooo… why didn’t I receive the full $100? 🤔

  7. at least you all got your money, mine is unable to be retrieved from Zelle – the way i am supposed to receive mine. I have no idea who to receive this from in order to get it in Zelle – this is consumer fraud, unless proven otherwise when i receive my token settlement.

  8. Clearly Verizon’s full contempt for their customers, our courts, and country is on full display with this case. These ghouls only speak one language and it’s money. Take your businesses elsewhere and deny them the opportunity to do what they prove they will do every chance they get; lie and steal from us.
