A popular cookie brand has issued a nationwide recall after it was found to contain almonds, a known allergen, without properly declaring it on the label—posing a potential life-threatening risk to those with almond allergies.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a recall alert on Tuesday for the “Colussi Cantuccini Chocolate Drops” chocolate chip cookies, which are distributed by D. Coluccio & Sons. The recall follows an urgent notification from the Italian manufacturer of the product.
According to the FDA, the recall was triggered after it was discovered that these cookies, which contain almonds, were mistakenly packaged without revealing the presence of almonds. The issue originated from a temporary malfunction in the company’s production and packaging lines.
The affected cookies are sold in 10.58 oz blue bags, featuring a UPC code of 8002590006020. Two separate batches are involved in the recall: one has a lot number of 3540152 and a best-before date of January 15, 2025, while the other carries the lot number L354150 with a best-before date of May 29, 2025.

These products were shipped to retail stores and mail-order locations nationwide, putting consumers at risk. Individuals with tree nut allergies—specifically almonds—are particularly vulnerable to severe allergic reactions upon consuming these cookies.
The FDA urges customers who have purchased the affected cookies to return them to the retailer for a full refund. The recall serves as a reminder of the critical importance of proper food labeling, which allows consumers to avoid potentially harmful allergens like almonds.
Under the 2021 Food Allergy Safety, Treatment, Education, and Research (FASTER) Act, almonds are classified as one of the nine major food allergens, alongside eggs, fish, milk, peanuts, sesame, shellfish, soybeans, and wheat. For individuals with almond allergies, even a small exposure can cause serious health issues, ranging from mild symptoms like itching, rash, or stomach discomfort to severe reactions such as anaphylaxis.

Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening condition that can cause swelling in the throat, difficulty breathing, and a sudden drop in blood pressure, leading to dizziness and loss of consciousness. Early recognition of symptoms and immediate administration of epinephrine can help manage this emergency and prevent more severe outcomes.
This recall emphasizes the importance of clear food labeling and raises awareness about the potential risks of unlisted allergens in food products.
