Murfreesboro – A three-vehicle crash in Murfreesboro on New Year’s Day led to one of the vehicles slamming into an apartment building, causing a terrifying scene for witnesses.
Bill Gomez, who was sitting at a red light with his family in their SUV at the intersection of Middle Tennessee Boulevard and Bradyville Pike, described the moments leading up to the crash as surreal. “I couldn’t believe it was happening,” Gomez recalled. His vehicle was struck by two other cars in what seemed like an instant.
Gomez believes the crash occurred when a white SUV ran a red light and collided with another vehicle, causing it to ricochet into his SUV. “Everybody in my vehicle was in shock,” Gomez said.
After the initial collision, the white SUV careened into Vanessa Cantù’s apartment building at Chelsea Place Apartments at approximately 12:45 p.m. Cantù and her boyfriend were startled awake by the noise of the crash. “It sounded like a dump truck, but it was louder, and then the house shook,” Cantù recalled.
Firefighters reported that the white SUV hit the corner unit below Cantù’s apartment. Cantù’s heart sank as she feared for the safety of her neighbor. Thankfully, her neighbor emerged unscathed, explaining he had been in the restroom at the time of the crash.
Emergency responders worked quickly to pull the car from the building, board up the hole, and tow away the damaged vehicles. Cantù expressed relief that no one was seriously injured, as she was allowed to return to her apartment after the scene was cleared.
As for Gomez, he was transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center with a shoulder injury and is now recovering. “It almost felt like a slow-motion situation,” he said, still shaken from the event.
