Washington state – While the federal minimum wage has remained stagnant at $7.25 per hour since 2009, many states have taken matters into their own hands, raising their minimum wages to help residents earn a more livable income.

Each January, some states automatically increase their minimum wage, while others use ballot measures to make adjustments. Washington state currently boasts the highest minimum wage in the country.

Key Minimum Wage Increases on January 1, 2025

On January 1, 2025, 21 states increased their minimum wage, benefiting over 9.2 million workers. Additionally, approximately 48 cities and localities also raised their minimum wage, including Flagstaff, Arizona, where the wage increased to $17.85, and Seattle, Washington, where it reached $20.76.

States with Future Wage Increases

While many states adjusted their wages at the beginning of the year, others will do so later in 2025:

  • Oregon will raise its minimum wage from $14.70 per hour to a new rate based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) starting July 1.
  • Florida will increase its minimum wage from $13 per hour to $14 per hour, effective September 30.
  • Washington, D.C. will also raise its minimum wage to $17.50 per hour on July 1.

The Bigger Picture

The wage increases are part of a broader movement across the U.S. to address income inequality and help workers keep pace with inflation. These changes reflect the growing recognition of the need to support low-income workers with fairer compensation.
