Apna Wholesale Inc. has issued a recall for its “Paras Premium Golden Raisins” in both 7-ounce and 14-ounce packages due to the undeclared presence of sulphur dioxide, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on Wednesday.
The recall, which was made public following an investigation, affects products sold at Apna Bazar Farmers Market locations in New York and Massachusetts. The raisins, packaged in clear bags, are identified by UPC codes 818051014811 and 818051014828. So far, the FDA has reported no illnesses related to the recalled product.
The issue came to light after routine testing by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. Upon analysis, food inspectors discovered that the raisins contained sulphites, which were not listed on the label. Sulphur dioxide, a preservative commonly used in dried fruits, can cause serious allergic reactions in people sensitive to sulfites.
For individuals who are allergic or sensitive to sulfites, consuming as little as 10 milligrams per serving can trigger severe reactions, particularly in those with asthma. In the case of these raisins, testing revealed levels of sulphites as high as 56.8 milligrams per serving—far above the threshold that can lead to anaphylactic shock, a potentially fatal condition that requires immediate medical attention.

The FDA warns that anaphylaxis can cause symptoms ranging from difficulty breathing to a sudden drop in blood pressure and swelling of the throat, which may lead to suffocation if not treated right away. While most food allergies cause milder symptoms like skin irritation or stomach discomfort, anaphylaxis is a life-threatening emergency that requires prompt action.
The FDA’s recall notice includes images of the affected product, helping customers identify whether they have purchased the recalled raisins. Apna Wholesale Inc. is urging anyone who has bought the affected raisins to return them to the store for a full refund.
