Western Pennsylvania residents should brace for a significant shift in weather this weekend as a cold front brings a mix of rain, snow, and plunging temperatures, affecting travel and outdoor activities.

According to the National Weather Service, precipitation will start early Saturday, transitioning from rain to snow by afternoon as temperatures drop. Areas north of I-80, including parts of the Allegheny Plateau, could see up to two inches of snow. South of Pittsburgh, a rain-snow mix will likely keep snow accumulation to a minimum.

By Saturday evening, temperatures will plummet into the teens, leading to icy conditions on roads and sidewalks. Any residual moisture from earlier rain or snow is expected to freeze overnight, creating hazards, especially on bridges and overpasses. Authorities are urging drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution during the overnight hours.

Sunday will bring additional snow, driven by lake-effect showers, with temperatures struggling to rise above 25°F. Overnight lows will dip into the single digits, and the cold snap will persist into the start of next week. Monday is expected to be the coldest day, with highs not expected to rise above 10°F.

Local residents are advised to stay on top of weather reports and prepare for extended cold conditions. It’s important to ensure your vehicle is winter-ready and to stock up on essential supplies, as travel may be delayed or difficult. Snow spotters are encouraged to report significant accumulations to the National Weather Service to assist in tracking the storm’s progress.

With rapidly changing conditions, staying informed and prepared will be key to navigating this winter weather safely.
