Who Is Eligible for Cold Weather Payments?

Cold Weather Payments are available to residents in England and Wales who receive certain benefits. A separate scheme operates in Northern Ireland, while Scotland provides automatic winter heating support regardless of specific cold spells.

Eligible benefits include:

  • Pension Credit
  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Universal Credit
  • Support for Mortgage Interest

How Payments Are Determined

Not everyone receiving these benefits automatically qualifies. Payments depend on several factors, including household circumstances and local temperatures.

National Overview

Last winter, 364,000 payments were made across England and Wales, costing a total of £9.1 million. Some areas, like Cumbria, experienced multiple triggers, with eligible recipients receiving up to £75 during separate cold spells.

Final Thoughts

Cold Weather Payments offer vital support to vulnerable households during freezing weather. To find out if your area qualifies, you can check your postcode on the DWP’s website.
