The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is issuing Cold Weather Payments to households in affected postcodes as snow, ice, and freezing temperatures increase heating costs across the country.
The UK has recorded its coldest January night in 15 years, with forecasts predicting further icy conditions. Weather warnings for ice covered much of Wales, Northern Ireland, and large parts of eastern England until 10:00 AM this morning.
Last night marked the coldest January overnight temperature since 2010, a year that saw temperatures plunge below -15°C multiple times.
What Are DWP Cold Weather Payments?
Cold Weather Payments are part of a government initiative to assist households with heating costs when temperatures drop to freezing. Eligible households receive £25 for each seven-day period during which the average temperature in their area falls to 0°C or below.
This payment applies to conditions recorded or forecast between November 1, 2024, and March 31, 2025. Funds are credited to bank accounts within 14 days of the qualifying seven-day period.

How Are Cold Weather Payments Determined?
Payments are triggered based on postcode-specific weather conditions. Areas with colder climates see more frequent payments, but the scheme helps households across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland during severe winters.
Residents can check eligibility for Cold Weather Payments through the official DWP postcode checker. Note that this scheme does not extend to Scotland, where a one-off Winter Heating Payment of £60 is available.
