The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has announced the activation of new Cold Weather Payments for households in 51 postcode areas, impacting approximately 95,000 eligible residents. The latest wave of payments covers 45 postcode areas in West Yorkshire, including Bradford, Halifax, and Huddersfield, as well as parts of East Lancashire, including Burnley. Additionally, six postcode districts in North Yorkshire and County Durham are also included.

Cold Weather Payments are available to eligible residents in England and Wales who receive benefits such as Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Universal Credit, or Support for Mortgage Interest. However, not all claimants of these benefits will automatically receive the payments; eligibility is determined by various factors.

In Scotland, a separate heating bill support scheme is available, which is not linked to specific cold weather events.

For reference, last year’s Cold Weather Payments totaled £9.1 million, with over 364,000 payments made across England and Wales. In some areas, such as Cumbria, multiple Cold Weather Payments were triggered during different cold spells, with recipients receiving up to £75 in total.

Eligible households can check their specific postcode area for Cold Weather Payment eligibility via the DWP’s interactive map.
