President Joe Biden has pledged immediate financial relief for those affected by the devastating wildfires sweeping through California. During an Oval Office briefing on Thursday evening, Biden confirmed that the federal government would issue one-time payments of $770 to help residents cover essential needs such as food, clothing, prescriptions, and baby formula.
So far, nearly 6,000 individuals have been approved for assistance, amounting to $5.1 million in direct aid. “We’re not waiting until the fires are out to start helping,” Biden emphasized. “We’re providing support right now.”
Federal Disaster Aid and Cost Coverage
Following his approval of California’s disaster declaration on January 8, Biden ensured federal funding would be available to affected communities, particularly in Los Angeles. The assistance covers temporary housing, home repairs, and low-interest loans for uninsured property damage. Additionally, the federal government will cover 100% of California’s disaster response costs for the next six months.
Despite these measures, Biden urged Congress to allocate additional funding to aid in the state’s recovery. “It’s going to take tens of billions of dollars to restore Los Angeles,” he stated, calling on lawmakers to take swift action.
FEMA Response and Shelter Support
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator Deanne Criswell provided updates during the briefing, revealing that approximately 33,000 wildfire victims have applied for federal assistance—a number that continues to rise.

Criswell also noted that between 700 and 800 people were currently staying in emergency shelters, while many others sought refuge with family, friends, or in hotels. Those staying in hotels may be eligible for reimbursement under federal aid programs.
Federal Resources Mobilized
Alongside FEMA, the Department of Defense and the National Guard have deployed resources to combat the fires, which have claimed at least 24 lives. As emergency crews continue their efforts, federal and state agencies remain committed to providing relief and support for those affected.
